New Documentary Explores Rampant Sexual Harassment in the Modeling Industry

Sara Ziff began modeling at the age of 14 in New York. At her third casting, in the East Village, models went in to see the photographer one by one. When it was her turn, the photographer said he needed to see her without her shirt. Then he said it was still hard for him to imagine her for the story, so he asked her to take her pants off, too. Nervous, just 14 years old, and eager to succeed in her new profession, she obliged.
Stories like this are all too common in the modeling industry, though unlike anorexia or body-image issues, they’re hardly publicized. Ziff aims to expose them in the documentary she made called Picture Me. Over five years, she took cameras backstage at shows, to parties, and on photo shoots. Her now-ex-boyfriend, a filmmaker, came with her and shot, too. She gave cameras to fellow models and asked them to share their stories. Model Sena Cech described a disturbing casting with one of the industry’s top photographers:

Halfway through the meeting Cech is asked to strip. She does as instructed and takes off her clothes. Then the photographer starts undressing as well. “Baby — can you do something a little sexy,” he tells her. The photographer’s assistant, who is watching, eggs her on. What’s supposed to be the casting for a high-end fashion shoot turns into something more like an audition for a top-shelf magazine. The famous photographer demands to be touched sexually. “Sena — can you grab his cock and twist it real hard,” his assistant tells her. “He likes it when you squeeze it real hard and twist it.”

Cech did it, but turned down the job because she feared the audition was only a taste of what the shoot would be like. The photographer never wanted to work with her again. Ziff explains, “Pretty much every girl I have talked to has a story like it, but no one talks about it. It’s all under the radar because people are embarrassed and because the people in the industry who are doing these things are much more powerful, and the model is totally disposable. She could be gone in two years.” Young models don’t always have anyone to turn to. Just think of the enormous pressures placed on a poor 15-year-old from Latvia who is supporting her family and barely speaks English. Ziff continues:

“I’ve done shoots naked, totally naked. They sell it to you as: ‘Here’s this great artist and he wants to take your portrait.’ I had to switch off the voice in my head that said: ‘Do you really want to do this?’ When you’re being paid a lot of money and you want to appear cool you really don’t want to show any resistance to going with it.
“But at the end of the day I used to wonder: what’s the difference between doing a shoot in your underwear for Calvin Klein and being a stripper? Obviously you are compromising yourself. How far am I willing to go? How much am I willing to show for a big fat cheque?”

A model union could protect models from situations like these. A year and a half ago, two models based in Britain set one up that campaigns for better working conditions, holiday and sickness pay, and protection in case of injury. But they still have a lot of work to do.

Britney Spears Topless Pictures

These Britney Spears topless pictures were taken back in 2007 and are from behind the scenes of her music video shoot for the song “Gimme More,” and as you can see, the only thing Britney Spears is wearing is temporary tattoos on her nipples. Although, it looks like you can actually see her nipple, just not the areola (which is “tattooed“). I don’t know how Britney Spears thought tattooing her nipples and pole dancing topless was a good idea, but then again, it’s hard to understand how anything Britney Spears does is a good idea, so I’m just going to go with it.

Backstage, It’s Down to Bare Essentials

I see naked people. This is not because I have the uncanny powers of Haley Joel Osment or because I own X-Ray Specs. It is because looking at naked people is part of my job. Twice a year for a month or so I find myself spending a great deal of time backstage at fashion shows. And few other settings come to mind in which observing or standing alongside or quizzing people who are wearing next to nothing is an occupational … well, hazard is not the word.
That these people happen to be among the world’s most beautiful does little to diminish the surreal dimension of the circumstances. Consider what it is like to take notes as Gisele Bündchen holds forth while dressed in nothing but a G-string and you will get the idea. Picture interviewing Chad White — a model from whose torso statues could be cast — as a makeup artist strokes bronzing gel on his thighs, and the odd dimensions of the task become clear.
What is strangest, perhaps, about this particular form of employment — for which there is no comprehensive job description — is that being around rooms filled with unclad women and men is anything but stimulating. At least this is true for people in the fashion business, who are either puritanically decorous about nudity or so involved with clothes that often they can barely see the naked limbs for all the glorious weeds. And it is true for me.
It is not as though one is unaware that wandering backstage at a Victoria’s Secret fashion show is a died-and-gone-to-heaven dream for some people, or anyway, most Maxim readers. And it was plenty exciting when once, in a backstage scrum, Helena Christensen brushed against me with her breast. Still it must be said that, as in pro-sports locker rooms and on pornographic-movie sets, after a while you stop being shocked.
“It’s all context,” said Tim Blanks, a contributing editor for Style.com and Men.Style.com, who over two decades of backstage reporting has watched generations of models stripping down to their skivvies. “When you see some doll walking down the catwalk in some sheer thing or nearly naked, it’s fashion,” Mr. Blanks remarked in Paris last week. “If you saw that same girl pole dancing in a club, it would be hot.”
It is certainly true that the atmosphere at most fashion shows is weirdly unerotic. It may seem strange to say so, but even in a season like the one just ended — during which designers offered sheer blouses, peekaboo skirts, dropped crotches and bared breastssensuality seemed far from central. The parts that were revealed seemed no sexier than the parts that remained covered. Nakedness was less provocation than another design tool.
And backstage at the shows the atmosphere is always so frenetic and focused, the deadlines so tight, the volume of tasks to complete so improbable within the time allowed that Eros is the last thing on anybody’s mind.
“We’re here for the clothes, and so there’s nothing erotic about it,” the model Raquel Zimmermann said before the Chloé show in Paris on Sunday. “If you think about it, in Europe everyone goes topless on the beach and it’s not a big deal,” she added, noting that the naked pictures that surfaced from Carla Bruni’s modeling days did not exactly hinder her transition to first lady of France.
Things weren’t always so relaxed, of course. Anyone who remembers “Unzipped,” Douglas Keeve’s 1995 documentary about Isaac Mizrahi, will recall the lobbying required to persuade people like Naomi Campbell and Cindy Crawford to change clothes in front of a fashion show audience, while silhouetted behind a theatrical scrim. Nowadays, they would be lucky not to be asked to appear stark naked, as one model was in the designer Hussein Chalayan’s Spring 2007 show.
“What I hope for backstage is that everybody that’s there at that moment is serious and professional, and there for the clothes and not to be disrespectful and take a picture of a naked girl,” Ms. Zimmermann said.
This seemed a lot to ask for, given that the backstage area at Chloé, a tent set up in the Tuileries, was a typically elongated rectangle lined on two sides with tables and mirrors and chairs and stools and as crowded as a clown car.
There were makeup teams and hairdressing teams and manicurists and pedicurists. There were house photographers assigned to capture the atmosphere, fashion photographers assigned to capture the clothes for Vogue, beauty photographers who sell their images to the wire services. There were public relations people wearing earpieces and black suits. There were the security men known informally as les cravates rouges for their red ties.
There were modeling agents and bookers and boyfriends and hangers-on and minders. There were the models themselves, of course, and it is probably worth pointing out that every person in that room had some kind of camera.
Undoubtedly this is why so many pictures of unclothed models turn up on the Internet and also FTV, the French fashion channel whose video feeds the Indian government banned this year for what it called “unsuitable” content.
“It’s completely inappropriate” to capture pictures of models while they are changing in or out of their clothes, said Robert Fairer, who has photographed fashion backstage for Vogue for over a decade. But it happens. “Backstage areas are not hermetically sealed,” Mr. Fairer said.
They are imperfectly secured by the red ties in France and the house bouncers in Milan and the black suits hired to police the Bryant Park tents. They are also policed in an informal way by those in the business, who tend to be vigilant when it comes to the models, especially “the girls.”
“And they are girls,” said Brana Wolf, the fashion editor of Harper’s Bazaar and a seasoned stylist who has been known to chew out photographers caught snapping topless shots at shows she styles. “I go after them if I catch them taking pictures they shouldn’t,” said Ms. Wolf, referring particularly to photographs of the teenage Lolitas currently much in favor — girls like Karlie Kloss, a St. Louis native who is one of the big success stories of the season, and who recently turned 16.
“It is an issue,” Ms. Kloss said, as she waited before a show in Paris for her turn with hair and makeup. “People respect that you want and need some privacy,” she added, or most do, anyway.
“One time, I was with Vlada,” Ms. Kloss said, referring to the Russian model Vlada Roslyakova, and “a photographer took a picture of her topless and then left.” Ms. Roslyakova leapt from her chair, chased the woman into the street and tussled with her until she deleted the shot.
Still, it’s going to happen, Ms. Kloss added; even in these early days in the business, she said: “I’m numb to the nudity. It’s just part of the job.”
As Ms. Kloss said that, as if on cue, the Polish model Magdalena Frąckowiak wandered into view in a G-string and with her arms modestly wrapped around her bare torso. “I was raised as a small kid in the theater,” explained Ms. Frąckowiak, who just turned 24. “So, for me, doing modeling is a little bit like being in a play. And being backstage is like every backstage, where you’re changing costumes and you have to be nude and so what?”
What is the point of being prudish, as the model Chad White once told me before a Duckie Brown show. At the time, Mr. White was barefoot and wearing a postage stamp bikini. When asked whether it wasn’t embarrassing to parade nearly buck naked in front of so many strangers, he laughed. “You should see what they put me in on the runway at Dolce & Gabbana,” Mr. White said. “Compared to that, right now I’m wearing a lot.”

Baring all on the beach

The topic of naturism in public places is always a hot topic…would you like Jersey to have an official nudist beach?
A few years ago BBC Jersey reported that British Naturism was encouraging its Jersey members to meet for informal gatherings, and it sparked a passionate debate over whether there should be a dedicated nudist beach in the island.
As things stands there are no officially designated areas in the island for naturism, although there are rumours of some locations being occasionally used by naturists.
At the moment getting naked in public is illegal (including topless for women) under the Policing of Beaches Regulations, and doing so can result in a caution or even arrest (if a member of the public finds it offensive).
However, many people felt that if a secluded piece of shoreline was turned into a nudist beach, and there were plenty of signs warning the public of potential nakedness, that there wouldn’t be a problem.
85% in favour
In fact, in a non-scientific poll of more than six hundred people, 85% were in favour of designating one of Jersey’s beaches for naturists, compared with just 8% who were against it (the remaining 7% didn’t mind either way).
“What a great idea,” wrote Simon, “it’s about time the island relaxed a little and gave the naturists somewhere to strut their stuff.”
Roddy agreed that there should be a “discreet” official beach where naturists can gather so that non-naturists “would therefore be able to avoid the area if they found naturism repulsive”.
The value of the naked pound
Plenty of people argued that the Jersey tourism market could get a boost if there was an authorised nudist beach in the island:
“I would have thought Jersey would have realised that the Naturist GBP or Euro is worth having,” said Stewart.
“Face up to the fact that the naked pound is a good source of income,” agreed Pete. “I’ve been on holiday to Jersey many times and the only thing the island lacks is a naturist beach.”
Another holidaymaker from Surrey said Jersey was “a very warm, welcoming and beautiful environment” and that he would “seriously consider returning” if naturists were catered for.
Don’t like it? Stay away!
“I would urge Jersey to set aside a beach somewhere on the island,” said Ian, “the combination of stunning coast and good weather is just too good to be ignored”.
And it wasn’t just naturists who felt that Jersey would benefit from having an official nudist’s beach:
“It’s not my scene but I see no reason why those who want to be as nature intended should not have designated areas where they can,” said Paul, “Those who don’t like it can stay away.”
The guy from the cornershop - naked
There were a handful of people who felt that Jersey was not the right sort of place to have a nudist beach:
“Jersey’s too small for it to be legal anywhere,” said JW, “I really don’t want to bump into a colleague, the guy from the Co-Op or my Mum’s friend baring their all!”
Then there were others who were against the idea on principle as they don’t agree with naturism in public places:
“The last thing I wish to come across upon a leisure visit to St Ouen is a gaggle of naked pensioners,” explained Steven. “Some acts are just plainly offensive and public nudity is damn well one of them.”
‘Simply exhibitionism
“It’s a seriously bad idea,” said Eddie. “The beaches are for everyone and it’s a ridiculous idea to set aside a nice stretch of sand for a naturist minority.”
Nudism is simply exhibitionism – a sexual fetish,” Nev believed.
“It is inappropriate to show naked flesh in public,” said Andreas, “the temptation is too great to resist for some heathens out there.”
Nudity does not imply obscenity
The majority of comments submitted to bbc.co.uk/jersey held that naturism is nothing to do with sexuality, and that it’s about feeling relaxed in your own skin ‘as nature intended’.
“It is possible to be totally naked but still act with dignity and decorum. Nudity does not imply obscenity,” argued Reg.
“Come on – what’s more natural than wearing no clothes?” asked Helen. “It’s refreshing in this chemical, artificial world we now live in.”
Mother Nature is no excuse
Suzanne agreed that whilst nudity may be ‘natural’ she didn’t think that it makes a case to walk around naked:
“Being nude is Mother Nature, but so are many other things which we do not continue to pursue, or pursue in public;
“Mother Nature dictates that women are made for nurturing babies and staying at home – but we don’t pursue that.
“Mother Nature dictates that humans have sex – but we do not do that in public.”
Attitudes change
Craig thought that the step to totally nudity is not a big one to take here on Jersey beaches anyway:
Topless sunbathing for women has been commonly accepted here for many years, and bikini bottoms have got smaller and smaller to the point where there really isn’t much point in wearing them at all.”
He hoped that in the future all beaches might be clothes-optional:
“All but the most prudish of people look back at the Victorian days of bathing machines and swimming attire that people wore with a touch of laughter,” he said.
“Hopefully one day we will look back on this era at how we used to swim and sunbathe whilst wearing clothes and chuckle to ourselves how ridiculous that was.”
The debate rages on…
So, the argument for and against Jersey having a designated nudist beach continues well into 2007 – but what do you think?
If Jersey had a nudist beach would you be whipping off your clothes and heading down there like a shot, or do you think that it’s just plain wrong to have your wobbly bits out in public?
