When I was a kid, my older brother Bob and I would don our Sunday’s best, put a record on the turntable and proceed to sing Kenny Rogers songs to anyone or anything that would listen to us.

According to mom we were cuter than snot, standing on the fireplace bench like it was a stage, lustily singing “The Gambler”, not really knowing that there was some kind of philosophical message behind the singable chorus.

In a little over a week, I’ll be dancing across another stage, and if the gods are kind I’ll have a diploma in hand and I’ll walk out of this card game and into another. And you know what? I’m not as scared as I thought I would be. I’ve learned how to play this game well - college that is - and I’m looking forward to a new hand.

But I couldn’t have played this game without the “cards” I’ve acquired along the way. First of all I’d like to thank my mom and dad for the trust that they’ve shown me, even when they didn’t know what the hell I was doing. My grandparents, my nephews, and my brother have also been very important to me.

I’ve also met a few mentors these past four years. Thanks to Jennifer Cantine, Jerry Johnson, Marian Kaehler and Dick Dovenberg for all of the times that you’ve listened to me bemoan my fate as a student and for offering me advice, a beer, or even a hug.

There are some people who aren’t thanked enough. Judy and Julie in the Olin building come to mind. Thank you for your friendship and guidance during my freshman year.

The Student Support Services (SSS) are also to be thanked, along with my advisor Mary Hull Mohr, for getting me out of those academic troubles I’ve found myself in from time to time.

Thanks to the Chips staff. I know that I keep telling you guys that I won’t miss you, but I will. Our games and hi-jinx will not be forgotten for a long time.

And to my friends - it is for sure that I am going to miss you, but know that there is a huge place in my heart for all of you and Luther College and the people I’ve encountered these past four years.
